Content Advisory for Sweeney Todd
We look forward to welcoming you to our production of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. As you consider purchasing tickets, please be aware that this musical explores mature themes, including violence, murder, and implied cannibalism, and contains some language of implied abuse. We recommend this show for ages 12+ but welcome families to investigate the musical for themselves and make a decision that feels appropriate to them.
Additionally, in Act Two there is a song titled “City on Fire.” In light of the recent fires in Los Angeles and the impact on our community, we want to highlight this moment for audience members who may still be processing the aftermath. The portrayal is entirely fictional and rooted in the show’s 19th-century London setting, but we understand it may be emotionally sensitive for some viewers.
By engaging with this challenging material, including Stephen Sondheim’s intricate melodies and expertly crafted lyrics, in an educational setting, we believe our students develop skills that encourage critical thinking and compassionate perspective-taking. Through the musical’s dark wit and compelling drama, we hope that audiences come away with a deeper appreciation for the show’s exploration of justice, empathy, and the consequences of unchecked vengeance.
If you or anyone in your party has concerns about these themes, we encourage you to reach out with any questions before attending. We appreciate your understanding as we strive to bring this compelling musical to life with both artistic integrity and sensitivity to our community’s recent experiences. We look forward to sharing this performance with you.
